Eosinophils in corneas removed by penetrating keratoplasty.

چکیده
One hundred consecutively submitted corneas removed by penetrating keratoplasty were studied histologically to determine the frequency in which eosinophils are found. In 20 corneas eosinophils occurred in densities ranging from 0.2 to more than 50 per high power field (HPF), and accounted for 1.5% to 100% of the total leucocytes counted. More than half of the corneal specimens containing eosinophils, including six of seven corneas having the highest eosinophil concentrations, were failed grafts. Because the concentration of eosinophils was in many cases beyond that attributable to non-specific vascular permeability, the existence of eosinophil chemotaxic substances in the cornea is postulated.

Comparison of K-Sol and M-K medium for cornea storage: results of penetrating keratoplasty in rabbits.
Five pairs of rabbit corneas were stored for two weeks at 4 degrees C, one of each pair in K-Sol medium, and one in McCarey-/Kaufman (M-K) medium. After transplantation all penetrating keratoplasty grafts became clear and thin. Endothelial cell loss was significantly less in the K-Sol stored corneas. Another five pairs of corneas were stored for two weeks in K-Sol or three days in M-K medium. A...
متن کاملEvaluation of stability and biocompatibility of PHEMA-PMMA keratoprosthesis by penetrating keratoplasty in rabbits
Artificial corneas have been developed as an alternative to natural donor tissue to replace damaged or diseased corneas. This study was conducted to evaluate the stability and biocompatibility of PHEMA-PMMA [poly (2-hydroxyl methacrylate)-poly (methyl methacrylate)] keratoprostheses in rabbits following penetrating keratoplasty. Sixteen male New Zealand White rabbits aged 16 weeks were divided ...
متن کاملComplications associated with bovine corneal endothelial cell-lined homografts in the cat.
Cultured bovine corneal endothelial cells were subcultured onto feline corneas from which the native endothelium had been mechanically removed, and transplanted into cats via penetrating keratoplasty. Although the transplants remained thin and clear in the immediate postoperative period, correlative clinical and morphologic analysis disclosed evidence of a host response directed against the het...
متن کاملConductive keratoplasty: histological study of human corneas.
PURPOSE To determine the morphologic changes in human corneas over time following radiofrequency-based conductive keratoplasty (CK) treatment. DESIGN Prospective, observational case series. METHODS In a single-center study six human corneas of six patients with localized peripheral keratoconus underwent CK treatment followed by penetrating keratoplasty. Three spots were applied in the perip...
متن کاملKeratocyte and subbasal nerve density after penetrating keratoplasty.
PURPOSE To determine central keratocyte and subbasal nerve densities after penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in clear grafts and in grafts with late endothelial failure (LEF). METHODS Ninety-nine clear grafts of 74 patients and 21 grafts with LEF in 19 patients were examined by confocal microscopy at 1 to 31 years after PK. Keratocyte density and number of keratocytes in a full-thickness column o...
